Our History

Alie Jewelers was founded by Albert Alie, who moved to Dover from Biddeford, Maine, and started the business in October 1914.

Albert was a clockmaker, and that's how the business began.  Albert's sons Leo, a watchmaker, and Norman, a bench jeweler, watchmaker and gemologist, joined the business in the 30's and worked in the store for decades.

In the 60's, Leo Alie Jr. and his cousin Stephen Alie followed their fathers into the business, and now own the corporation.  Stephen is a gemologist while Leo is a bench jeweler, doing general repairs, alterations, as well as creating custom jewelry and setting stones.

In 1971, the Alies purchased a store in Portsmouth, which is now managed by Stephen.  Leo oversees the Dover location, along with this wife Martha.

Today Alie's remains one of the seacoasts oldest operating jewelry stores.  Many generations of local customers continue to select Alie's because they can feel comfortable purchasing jewelry and having repairs and alterations made at an established, family jewelry store.
